NEBULA NGC 7027, located
around 3,000 light-years (920 pc) in the constellation of Cygnus, was
discovered in 1878 by Édouard Stephan. It can be viewed with a standard
backyard telescope and typically looks like a spot, though it has a radius of 14,000AU. More details about the nebula were revealed by images from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Hubble images of NGC 7027 allowed scientists to deduce that it is a planetary nebula rich in carbon that began expanding 600 years ago. It contains about three times the mass of our Sun. The image is in assigned colours.
